Rick Warren’s Roman Catholic Affinity

This video reveals the long standing intent and affinity of Rick Warren with Roman Catholics. This is nothing new since Rick Warren has been trying to unite Islam, Roman Catholicism, and Protestants for several years now. However, this video candidly reveals his judgment on major, doctrinal matters. At one point Rick Warren states, “…if you love Jesus, we are on the same team.” This, of course, is meant that if you profess to love Jesus we are on the same team, not if you are genuinely born again by the Spirit of God through faith alone. This kind of mixing of poisoned waters is dangerous! I love Roman Catholics. I love them so much I will tell them the truth of justification by faith alone through Christ’s finished work on the cross. According to Warren, though, we are on the same team. However, in order to be on the same team, we must all play by the same playbook. Roman Catholics clearly do not, and neither does Rick Warren.

Pray for his followers and pray for Rick Warren’s soul.

  1. As a Catholic, I’d love to talk to you about “justification by faith alone through Christ’s finished work on the cross”.

    When Catholics went to mass last Sunday, we celebrated the Feast of Christ the King, the last Sunday of the liturgical year before Advent, which starts the new year today. The Gospel reading for the last Sunday of the year appropriately focuses on the end times – Matthew 25:31-46 – the sheep and the goats.

    Both groups address Jesus as “Lord”, but as it says in Matthew 7:21 “Not every one that said to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that does the will of my Father which is in heaven.”

    According to Jesus, doing the will of the Father – feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the imprisoned – is the difference between going away to eternal punishment or eternal life.

    As I’m sure you know, the only place “faith alone” appears in the New Testament, it is preceded with “not by”.

    C’mon – don’t tell people that they don’t have to play – which team do you want to be on – the sheep or the goats?

  2. Damien, thanks for your response. The works that you reference in Matthew 25 is a product of one’s faith, not the essential requirement of obtaining eternal life. Also, when you referenced Matt 7, you failed to mention what those who will not inherit eternal life will cry out to God saying, “Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?” And Jesus will say, “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!” (Matt. 7:22-23)

    Notice that these people are calling Christ Lord, doing many works, but still classified as practicing lawlessness. How is that? Christ determines that salvation is by Him knowing them. Also, notice He states how he never knew them. Those that name the name of Christ should depart form iniquity, yes. And faith without works is indeed dead. But salvation is not dependent upon works in order to be born again. In Matthew 25 Jesus lays out what is the behavior of true believers. But true believers first believe before they work. And according to Matt. 7, not all that work for God truly believes. Genuine faith produces works, but works does not always necessitate genuine faith. This is why when Jesus was asked by the crowd in John 6:28-29, “Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” Jesus responds with, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.” Does Jesus remove the reality of works by this statement? Not at all. But he refocuses the attention of salvation by believing on Christ as being the means for it. Notice, in that same chapter, all who said they believed eventually fell away (John 6:66). The reason for this is because their belief was not genuine. That is because it was for the wrong reasons.
    I pray I don’t sound caustic. I am only revealing what the Scriptures systematically reveal. Systematic theology being the key to understanding justification by faith alone. The works that you mention is laid out in Matt 25 as being “difference between going away to eternal punishment or eternal life” is essentially saying that you believe that works is the very thing that will be the determining factor of whether or not we are to receive eternal life, which Scripture says is a gift (Ephesians 2:8), and gifts of grace (i.e. eternal life) that are worked for are no longer gifts or grace (Romans 11:6).

    Works make faith perfect as James says. And it justifies us in the sense that it proves our faith. But that is the point. Works always points back to faith. If there is no genuine faith, there are is no genuine works. But as Scripture states, you can have works, but not genuine faith. James points out the one aspect of genuine faith producing works, and Jesus and Paul point out the opposite. Works is not sufficient to make the difference in obtaining eternal life, which Scripture says is a gift. Since works is dependent upon faith, logically it is deficient, because it is dependent upon something else to gain its significance or worth. Since works is a product of faith (but not always) it therefore necessitates that whatever it is dependent upon is more essential. And since faith, in and of itself, is deficient to save unless it is in Christ alone and His finished work on the cross, it therefore follows that Christ is sufficient to save us from our sin apart from our works. This is why faith alone is significant. Not that faith alone means that works never follows, or that the simple possession of faith is what is needed to be saved, but that faith alone is necessary to obtaining salvation as long as it is in Christ, and inevitably works will follow. This is what the Scriptures systematically teach.

    Your reply is scripturally and doctrinally sound in every aspect. Do these works righteousness advocates realize that they would have us join them in diminishing the intent and purpose of the passion of Christ. They attempt to rob Jesus of His glory. They seek to boast before fallen humanity of their good works for their own aggrandizement but not for Christ’s.
    The gentiles received what the Jews could not receive because the Jews, likewise, sought after it by works and not by faith. This was the error and indeed the self righteous sin of Cain. This was the self-righteous sin of the prodigals brother. This is the self righteous sin the Pharisees such as Saul of
    Tarsus to persecute Jesus by persecuting His born again followers.

    If Catholics ever ceased going “beyond what is written” they would be protestants.

    Jesus said in Matt. 11:11 that John the Baptist (and not His mother) was the most righteous person born of a woman.
