Quotes (943)

There will be no deception at the last day. The unerring eye of God will discern who are His own people, and who are not. Nothing but true faith shall abide the fire of His judgment. All spurious Christianity shall be weighed in the balance and found lacking. None but true believers shall sit down at the marriage supper of the Lamb. It shall avail the hypocrite nothing that he has been a loud talker about religion, and had the reputation of being an eminent Christian among men. His triumphing shall be but for a moment. He shall be stripped of all his borrowed plumage, and stand naked and shivering before the bar of God, speechless, self-condemned, hopeless, and helpless. He shall be cast into outer darkness with shame, and reap according as he has sown.

- J. C. Ryle

Nobody speaks like Ryle!! Frightening words!
Is there anything more important than living a Spirit directed life to the glory of God?
    (2 Corinthians 13:5)

  2. Amen! On the Last Day, the earth and sky will even try to flee from Him – and there will be no place for them, or anyone else, to hide.

    Pilgrim, brilliant quote by Ryle.

“All spurious Christianity shall be weighed in the balance and found lacking.”
“None but true believers shall sit down at the marriage supper of the Lamb.”
“It shall avail the hypocrite nothing that he has been a loud talker about religion, and had the reputation of being an eminent Christian among men.”

How many of these do we see in the Church today? Tons. Their spruious Christianity will be found lacking. The hypocrite who is loud about his religion and had a reputation of being an eminent Christian….

He’s not talking about Osteen! He’s talking about us! Ryle just pointed his finger at us.

You nailed it! I would submit that keeping short accounts, as in confession, should be a priority to anyone serious about his or her walk!
And what about that topic you rarely here of now-a-days! “Should you not fear me?” declares the LORD. “Should you not tremble in my presence?” (Jer. 5:22)

These words from A.W.Pink are so moving!!

“Does any Christian reader imagine for a moment that when he or she shall stand before their holy Lord, that they will regret having lived “too strictly” on earth? Is there the slightest danger of His reproving any of His own because they were “too extreme” in “abstaining from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul” (1 Peter 2:11)? We may gain the good will and good works of worldly religionists today, by our compromising on “little points,” but shall we receive His smile and approval on that day? Oh to be more concerned about what He thinks, and less concerned about what perishing mortals think.”

    Nuff said!

  5. Ryle and Pink……..in the same thread, even! What a wonderful blog site. Wish there were more preachers, theologians, ministers, and writers like these godly men of old.

Bet their churches didn’t have teenager-led worship teams, latte stations in their foyers, and 20-30 minute “pulpit chats” on Sunday mornings (or evenings) either. Wonder if they were fans of Biblical hymnody as well (I’m betting they were).
