What the gospel is NOT.

Meet James Lyman. He is the man in the below video street preaching (I use the term very loosely as to not bring reproach upon those men out there who actually preach Christ and Him crucified on street corners).

As you’ll see in the video, exactly what Mr. Lyman is preaching is a little hard to pin down, as there seems to be no gospel message. It seems that Law and gospel have taken a backseat to just plain condemnation and ridicule.

If you recall, Mr. Lyman is the man who mocked, ridiculed, and called Rosie O’Donnell names while street preaching at this past year’s Superbowl. He then defended his actions here on DefCon.

How Mr. Lyman treats this woman is heartbreaking, for the message of the gospel is supposed to be the offense, not those who carry the message of the gospel.

For those who are not familiar with the preaching of the gospel, rest assured, this is not it.

  1. I expected to watch this with more sympathy for the “preacher” than I would probably admit to! But he is just an intimidating jerk picking on a woman. Not exactly apostolic.

  2. Does this guy have any idea what Scripture REALLY says? So, are all women condemned to Hell in his view? I see nothing from his actions which demonstrate HE is Christian, rather he appears to be a tool of Satan.

  3. There was this one time my sister (a believer) was watching an open air preacher, and when my sister raised her hand to ask something, the guy just blasted her for being an adulterer…fyi, she’s never known a man.
I tend to side with open air preachers when I hear bad things about them (knowing how irrational and antithetical our age is to preaching the Gospel and using the Law to convict sins), but this is over the top antagonistic.

  4. While I completely agree with your thoughts in the post, I have to question the wisdom of giving guys like this lore publicity and exposure. Watching the video, it seems obvious that he is simply a “hey look at me” kind of guy. I would venture that when he grows tired of “christianity” he will move on to some other way to vent his internal rage and make himself feel superior.
This kind of rage and blindness doesn’t set in over night, it is usually brought on by years of unrepentant sin. I’ll bet if we could see his personal and thought life, we would be have quite a shock!

  5. wow, this guy is so jeering and disrespecting people especially women. So blatantly obvious that it’s not from someone who knows God’s mercy and grace in his own life. Such scatological vitriolic talk spewing from his mouth that is conspicuously not from GOD but from his wicked heart. Jesus doesn’t talk to people like that and he certainly doesn’t treat people like that. Look at how he treated the woman at the well>> Look at how Jesus never condemned her and was so kind and gentle to her. Look at how Jesus treated women.. Jesus hailed women and Jesus taught women right alongside men as equals -Mat. 14:21,15:38. And often times when Jesus taught he used women’s activities to illustrate the character of the kingdom of God, such as baking bread-Lk. 13:20-21, Grinding corn Lk. 17:35, and sweeping the house to find a lost coin-Lk. 15:8-10. Some Jewish rabbis taught that a man should not speak to a woman in a public place, yet Jesus not only spoke to a woman (who incidentally was a Samaritan), but also drank from her cup in a public place _jn. 4:1-30. the first person He appeared to after His resurrection from the dead was Mary and not the male disciples-Mat. 28:9-10. Clearly, Jesus who is God had a very high view of women.
this guy acts more like a Pharisee than a disciple of Christ that’s for sure~~

Jesus made it very clear what he thought about men who speak careless words when he said:

“You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” -Matthew 12:34-37.

Also I’m reminded of God’s word that says “For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.”-James 1:20

This man does NOT show any kind of mercy, grace, or love of God. His speech is very jeering and uncouth -“An unfriendly man pursues selfish ends; he defies all sound judgment.”-Pro 18:1

I don’t know his heart (God does) but by golly I can judge from his fruit-(Mat.7:16) and according to the (fruit) of his lips and according to the fruit of his doctrine (no gospel of grace at all) – I’d say it’s rotten spiel straight from the pit of hell-the tongue has the power of life and death and those who love it will eat its fruit”

and what does this do? Sadly and devastatingly It leaves a black eye on genuine Christians who truly have a heart for the lost and want to share the good news so that people would be saved

And I don’t blame anyone who wouldn’t listen to him. Once you cut off a person’s nose, there’s no point in giving him a rose to smell.

Pro 17:27 “A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even-tempered.”

Pro 18:6 A fool’s lips bring him strife, and his mouth invites a beating.
Pro 18:7 A fool’s mouth is his undoing, and his lips are a snare to his soul.
Pro 19:1 Better a poor man whose walk is blameless than a fool whose lips are perverse.
Pro 10:31 The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but a perverse tongue will be cut out.
Pro 10:32 The lips of the righteous know what is fitting, but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse.
Pro 13:3 He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.

  6. Commenting on Glenn’s post above….I don’t know if this man is a “tool of Satan,” but I would say he’s certainly a ‘Tool.’ ;-)

P.S. Maybe if he spread his message with some hip-hop or rap music, it’d go over better.

  7. You know, if you wanted to put an end of freedom of speech for Christian preachers, this guy would be the perfect excuse for the authorities to do that.

We need to pray that God would silence him and those like him for good.

  8. Words escape me. I watched other videos of this guy on youtube as well. I’m saddened by what this man is doing by dragging the name of Christ in the mud.

We are to be know by our love for others. We are to love God, love each other, love our neighbors, and love our enemies. We don’t condone the sinner’s behavior…but we certainly bring our reproof and correction in gentleness and love of Christ did. Of course they will scoff and refuse our words, but we represent Christ, the King. We demonstrate the love of Christ to them through our reproof…not demonstrate hate and judgement. What we have done to God is equal to what other sinners have done. Our salvation doesn’t make our works righteous…they are still filthy rags. But now we are covered by the works of another. This gives us no place to behave has this man has.

    In Christ’s love,

  9. Apparently this guy would rather be right than let the Holy Spirit teach him what He really wants him to speak on the street?

A couple of Scriptural ideas come to mind with that regard. Both of these ideas come from the writings of the Apostle Paul. The one is where he is addressing the foolishness of his Jewish countrymen who were going about establishing a righteousness of their own in zeal all the while missing the Righteousness of God which is by Faith in Jesus Christ. And the other is where the Apostle gives some insight into applying the Wisdom and Knowledge of the Holy Spirit Who gifts some brethren, such as he was, one called to bring the Gospel of the Kingdom to both Jews and Greeks, barbarians, wise and foolish peoples everywhere in the known world of his day!

While I admire the man’s boldness I certainly do not accept his sledge hammer approach to bringing the God of Peace’s Grace and Mercy and Peace to those living in darkness.

I guess the big irony is just how dark he is to the brightness of the Gospel of Light?

  10. As one who has been involved with evangelism and street preaching for some time, I must say that Mr. Lyman’s blasphemous use of Christ’s name to preach his own brand of phariscal hatred thoroughly sickens me. He clearly denies scripture when it commands to preach the gospel in truth and love. His animosity towards those he deems as sinners (clearly he does not view himself as one) demonstrates that he believes he is the instrument of God’s wrath rather than being deserving of that wrath himself. One who truly preaches the gospel is one who understands the depths of his own depravity, who understands he deserves nothing more than Hell itself, yet is amazed at the glorious grace of God who would condescend to take on human flesh and die in his place. So amazed is he by this grace, he cannot help but call others, loving, compassionately and urgently to the very Savior who redeemed him. Mr. Lyman demonstrates not one shred of this. I pray God humbles him and brings him to repentance quickly.

  11. Chris – AMEN brother! We have nothing – but God, Who is gracious, selected a people to save unto Himself to glorify His name among the pagans. We should weep for the lost, pleading with them to repent and believe; not knowing who the Lord has elected.

  12. “not knowing who the Lord has elected”
The elect are walking the streets today, they just don’t know it – yet!

  13. Let me clarify my first reply!
It’s absolutely true we have no clue who the elect are and as such must witness to ALL people in order to reach those who -will- be saved!

  14. Why not do an interview with me so I can defend my actions. There are many videos where I preach the gospel available. Perhaps the problem is that you do not understand biblical rebuke. Remember as well, you are seeing small clips that do not tell the complete scenario.

  15. OK, this I gotta see. Mr. Lyman, why wait for an interview that is not going to happen? Just post now your defense and justifications. I’m sure everybody would love to hear how you feel that holding a sign saying “Hillary needs to be at home doing the dishes” is Biblical rebuke. Equally interesting is how you will Biblically support going on and on about the world record for a woman being quiet (and I’ll believe your claim it was 15 seconds because if you can’t trust someone berating strangers through a megaphone, who can you trust?)

So please, enlighten us on exactly what context your actions were in that made them glorify the Name of Christ.

  16. This is so sad. Lord please remove this preacher before he does more damage for the rest of us. Last week as we set up to preach on Rodeo Dr, in Beverly Hills, security politely approached us. Evidently the week before us, a street preacher was calling women “whores” as they walked by, because of the way they were dressed. Sadly there’s a few well named preachers across this Nation, that do this kind of ungodly preaching.
