Quotes (753)

Gary Gilley The temptation arises for a church to change, or at least hide, who they are so that they appeal to unchurched Harry. Additionally, the church is tempted to alter its message to correspond with what Harry wants to hear and thinks he needs. The end result is a felt-need gospel that appeals to Harry’s fallen nature in an effort to entice him to come to Christ, the ultimate felt-need supplier, so that he is fulfilled and feels better about himself.

  1. Even Unchurched Harry’s brother, Churched Harry, his step-cousin, Semi-Churched Harry, and his Uncle Daddy, Parachurch Ministry Harry, are cheated and preyed upon when they are pandered to with non-Gospel emotional pep rallies, worldly entertainment, and shallow carnal counsel.

  2. Joanne says:

So true! I am trapped in one of those churches right now. My husband is blinded to what’s going on. I’ve tried to talk to him about it, but all I can do is pray that the Holy Spirit will give him eyes to see for himself!

  3. Berean Gal says:

    Excellent!
I’d much rather they come right out and say
that they’re changing than HIDE and be
deceptive about it, this only leads to playing
    both sides!
    Real confusion!

  4. I’m not trying to be critical, Joanne, and you may be doing this already, but actually there is another alternative to talking to your husband, and even to praying for him:

“Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. ”
    I Peter 3:1-2

  5. It took a while after I had concluded I needed to leave my former church (because of the reasons cited above) before my wife understood. But not long after we moved to a biblical church, where the Gospel is preached and elders are humble yet bold and families are encouraging one another, for her to tell me how wonderful it is.

    Grow not weary.

  6. Joanne says:

    Ministry Addict,

Thanks so much for your reply. I’ve been asking God’s help to be submissive to my husband in all things, and I know that God is ultimately in control. The sad thing is that our young adult son is also caught up in the inner circle of this “church” (the pastor had been his “youth minister”). There are a lot of things going on there. Please pray for our family!

  7. Joanne: I will pray. When you walk according to the light of God’s Word, He has a wonderful way of shining brightly into areas of darkness, so that error and falsehood becomes open and obvious even to those who do not at first want to see.
