What is man?

What is man that You are mindful of him? (Psalm 8:4)

Here’s the information behind this spectacular photograph of a “three-light-year-tall pillar of gas and dust from the Hubble space telescope.

NASA is releasing today a brand new Hubble photo of a small portion of one of the largest seen star-birth regions in the galaxy, the Carina Nebula. Towers of cool hydrogen laced with dust rise from the wall of the nebula. The scene is reminiscent of Hubble’s classic “Pillars of Creation” photo from 1995, but is even more striking in appearance. The image captures the top of a three-light-year-tall pillar of gas and dust that is being eaten away by the brilliant light from nearby bright stars. The pillar is also being pushed apart from within, as infant stars buried inside it fire off jets of gas that can be seen streaming from towering peaks like arrows sailing through the air.

  1. How many names do you think God would have to use for this one? What wonder, what glory, what power! Just think that God has formed this, created this thought all this up? He designed the processes allowing all of this would come about. And get this…He picked us and called us His own.

  2. The same verse came to mind as I reviewed those images yesterday as well!
I also realized as I looked at the images how incapable I was of really comprehending the vastness of our universe. To consider that everything in that picture is in just one tiny corner of our sky at which Hubble was pointed… that is amazing in itself. Then to consider the great distances between each of the stars seen in that image. It boggles the mind and leaves one in greater awe of our Creator.

  3. In light of this picture, can you, with a clean conscience (and a straight face) command God to go and bring you wealth, health and happiness?

  4. Jay and revivalandreformation: Amen!

From controlling each subatomic particle, all the way up to celestial body level, in His massive universe, and that is only in the physical plane. Then there is the whole realm of the unseen. How indescribable is His majesty and glory, honor and power. How dare anyone trifle with His holy name, or His holy word, or His holy character, or speak of Him as a “party-going cool dude”, or portray Him as a D.J., etc. We are all but dust. Only He is worthy of anything!

  5. Isn’t egypts gods the stars?
Isa 19:1 The burden of Egypt. Behold, the LORD rideth upon a swift cloud, and shall come into Egypt: and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at his presence, and the heart of Egypt shall melt in the midst of it.

Mat 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

    just a thought!

  6. Praise ye the LORD: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely.
The LORD doth build up Jerusalem: he gathereth together the outcasts of Israel.
He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.
He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.
Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.

  7. This is the sort of thing I think of when scripture describes the glory of God filling the Temple like a train of smoke and of the radiance surrounding his throne glowing like a rainbow.

Is it any wonder we fall short of His Glory? And like the psalmist, it boggles my mind that God would bother with me for anything other than my destruction, to remove the stain of me from His Creation. And this He does, not for anything in me, but according to His own purposes and for His own Glory, to display how glorious is the steadfast love of God to those who are least worthy of it.

Blessed be the Name of the Lord.

  8. Hubble’s Greatest Hits gets me every time. The images are always spectacular.

I also think about how much of the Bible is dedicated to the Creation (a couple of chapters at the beginning of Genesis), and how much of God’s Word is dedicated to describing His Plan of redemption!

What a good and kind God we serve!!

  9. I went on a class trip with my daughter to the St. Louis Science Center today, they had a good sized display of Darwin and his theory on evolution; I could not bring myself to spend too much time there. I saw many references to ‘millions of years’ at several exhibits, i.e., dinosaurs, fossils, volcanoes, etc. Then, I see this post…awesome! I praise God for the truth He has revealed to me, I am thankful I do not believe the lies most in this world swallow. I am amazed every time I see images like this…I don’t see how anyone could look at this and not admit there is indeed a magnificent Creator behind this masterpiece.

  10. My Father made all of this. And so much more that we cannot see. Hubble “Deep Field” was taken a few years ago (they did it twice). They pointed Hubble at a dark area of the sky where nothing had been observed previously. Perhaps a spot no bigger than the area your thumb would cover when your arm is out-stretched and the thumb extended upward. It was an eleven day open shutter shot. And boy did they hit the jackpot!!!

They found over ten thousand galaxies. Not just stars, but galaxies! Each with an estimated 500 million stars each.

We are the only generation to see these wonders that our Father has made. The lost see these wonders, too, but don’t know what it is they are seeing. Perhaps it is one more reason the lost will stand before the Lord condemned because they did not believe that our Father created all that is by His Son the Lord Jesus Christ (John 5:46&47).

“For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse”. Rom. 1:20

  11. Reminds me of this too;Mat 24:30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

  12. Wait, wait, wait. Our modern-day scientists and school text books say that everything contained in that picture originated when absolutely nothing that came from absolutely nowhere and exploded for absolutely no reason and now here we are.

And you thought fairy tales were only for children.

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. – Romans 1:20

  13. Don’t let Stephen Hawking find out about this picture. He’s afraid aliens might find out about us and come to do us harm.

  14. Our modern-day scientists…

    Not all of them!
