As if we needed more proof that Joel Osteen is one of those false teachers the Bible warns us about.

Recently Joel Osteen “blessed” Annise Parker, the new mayor of Houston, Texas who is openly homosexual. (See articles here, here, and here.)

“… We ask that everything we do would bring honor to you … and we just lift up especially Mayor Annise Parker. … Lord, we thank you just for raising her up and just for your goodness, your mercy in her life, and just for supernatural wisdom, Father. We honor her today and our other officials, and Lord, we count it a joy and honor to be here in your presence with all of our friends and we just thank you for this day. In Jesus name, amen.”

This is as mind boggling as the wolf who “blessed” an abortion mill, calling it “sacred ground.”

Ingrid Schlueter hits the nail on the head regarding Joel Osteen with this excerpt from her commentary:

We bring honor to God by asking Him to bless a woman who is living in conduct that He calls an “abomination”? Does Joel Osteen even possess a Bible?

  1. I am not surprised. We are ‘as it was in the days of Noah.’ And we are certainly as it was at the end of days for Sodom. But I can’t speak out against Olsteen. What’s the difference in what he did and in the many, many pastors who wink at sin in their own lives and , therefore, do not rebuke sin from the pulpit. ‘Sin’ virtually barely exists anymore. But God will not restrain judgement on all sin….whether church member, pastor, homosexual, and so forth. The ‘ye without sin cast the first stone’ pretty much silences those who should bring Godly rebuke wherever sin is observed. ‘Sin’ is a lethal matter.

  2. I am not surprised anymore. Let’s just pray that God will extend His sovereign grace and mercy to him and his flock.

  3. Things are bad aren’t they…?……..

  4. There should be a caption above Joel “what, me worry?”

  5. As a citizen of the swamp known as Houston, it is not news yet is still grieving to my soul to see people follow after Osteen.

Yes – he owns a Bible. He treats it as Harry Potter treats his magic wand. His only interest in the Bible is for what he can get from it – principles for living large with a Jesus of his own making.

    From such, turn away.

  6. Well, of course, in Osteen’s mind, I don’t think homosexuality is actually a sin, it’s just “not God’s best.”

  7. The Bible is very clear that government is appointed by God(Romans) … This mayor was elected by Americans… This should put us all on our faces repenting to God for the sins of our country and generation…

  8. “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;” Matthew 5:44

As a fellow brother in Christ, I praise your fervent commitment to your faith. But I do fear for it, because it seems far too based on fear than than the zealous love born out of indwelling of the Gospel of our Lord.

I myself am incredibly leery of Joel Osteen. I think that his ministerial emphasis, and the very ideas and themes that has him bringing in the numbers he does, are misled. I think they are largely wrong. I have not read any of his books however, so I am not warranted to give specifics.

But he does profess Jesus as his Savior, as wrong as he may be everywhere else. Whether we like it or not, he is our brother. Yes, maybe he is downright wrong. I am fully aware of this, and agree. But that means we are each individually responsible to treat him with the same amount of love and respect as we would for anyone in the family of Christ. Only then do we have the right and authority to speak of him and to him regarding that which is false.

As your brother in the name of Jesus Christ, I emplore each of us to walk in love before all things, as Christ clearly did. This does not necessarily mean backing off when we believe something to be false. But it means responding in love and truth, not fear and anger.

    In Christ, blessings.

“But he does profess Jesus as his Savior, as wrong as he may be everywhere else. Whether we like it or not, he is our brother.”

how do you know he is? there is an example of “professors” 2 Peter 2.

Again I ask the question, why is it that if we cannot question wether or not a person is saved, but we are quick to pronounce a person saved?

  10. cetangen,

If everybody who “professes Christ as Savior” is saved, then you would also have to call Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses our “brothers in Christ.” For that matter, we would also have to lump in the Gnostics as well. Problem is, there are many, many people running around saying “I love Jesus” while they believe and teach things that are not obedient to the commands of Christ.

The apostle John told us, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, if they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world” (1st John 4:2).

John also reminded his audience of the false brethren: “They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us” (1st John 2:19).

And the apostle Paul warned the Galatian church about the “false brethren” (Galatians 2:4)–men who claimed to be Christians, but were in fact enemies of the cross of Christ.

While we cannot bang the gavel and pronounce any man condemned, we must also be careful not to jump too quickly in calling a man–especially a man who teaches as much falsehood as Joel Osteen–a “brother in Christ” simply because he says he’s a Christian.

  11. Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.

“Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’

“And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.’

    – Matthew 7:21-23

  12. There is a video clip floatin around on the web of Osteen on Larry King. Osteen can’t or won’t give LK a straight up answer as to Jesus being the only way. I thought about these verse. I think they would apply to that type of situation. Seems to me that if he truly believed, he would be able to give LK a straight answer instead of saying “I just don’t know”

Mat10:32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.
Mat10:33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
Mat10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

  13. The video of Osteen you speak of can be seen on this post featuring a compilation of videos of speakers on Larry King. Only one of the men featured stands firm.

    It’s very eyeopening.

  14. Should have known J.M. would be the one standing up. I haven’t seen all of these. I will have to watch them later.

    Thanks Pilgrim

some of the things I see in these types of videos makes me want to cry or get sick or both. seriously. These are not just everyday lay men. these are men in the spotlight that are supposedly representing Christianity.

[Shane--I edited your comment per your request. It now reads the way you meant. 4*P]

  15. Ingrid asks: “Does Joel Osteen even possess a Bible?”

I couldn’t help but notice the podium in front of Lyin’ Joel Osteen’s spindly, spider-like appendages is empty apart from what appears to be some 8 1/2 x 11 talking points (e.g. “flash smile…drawl…say sumpin’ about “gawd”… flash smile…raise hands…say sumpin’ about “in Jeee-sus name”…squint…grimace…flash smile”), but I also noticed that the boastful sexual deviant Annise Parker has her hand planted squarely upon what appears to be the Good Book as she swears an oath to uphold her duties as mayor by invoking the witness of the thrice Holy Almighty God of the Bible.

    Irony of ironies!

It would be a comedy were it not such a tragedy!

    In Christ,
    CD

  16. He’s definitely praying to his god, alright ~meaning Satan, of course! He obviously doesn’t know the Lord and doesn’t really care. He is a wolf in sheep’s clothing or a hireling that only cares about money…probably both!

  17. Let us still pray for his salvation. Joel Osteen is still a man and in need of God. Isn’t this what we preach? A God who is mighty to save regardless of how wretched we are, filthy, undeserving people that we are. We are afterall, FALLEN.

Joel Osteen has nothing good to say about anything. We all know that. There is nothing biblical about his preaching. It’s as though he only uses the name of God like it’s an accessory and an insurance to keep his label as a Christian Pastor. This info has already been established between us and the rest of the world that knows the Word of God.

However, let’s pray that he will come into repentance. That God will extend his mercy upon these “so-called” preachers. It’s so easy to criticize (in Osteen’s case, I think it’s rightfully so!) but when the dust settles, let’s get down on our knees and pray that God will extend his salvation to Joel Osteen, and to all of his followers.

    my 2 cents again.

Grace and peace to all of you.

    In christ!

  18. This website is one of those false teachers the bible warned us about as well as the above…

The author should return to his mother church.

  19. Galatians 4:26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

The only way to return to our mother is to go above. That day will come when the Lord chooses.

  20. Oh Sarah….please, pray for wisdom and discernment. Those who contribute here at DefCon would be the first to admit how terribly imperfect they are (no offense guys!) and are saved only by the blood of Jesus. But they do their best to truly defend the faith. I pray that one day you will have ears to hear (or in this case, eyes to see).

    Kindly,
    Katy
