Reversing The Reformation – How Some So-Called Protestants Are Subtly Undermining Justification By Faith – By Terry Rayburn

Note: October 31 is Reformation Day, celebrating the Protestant Reformation, when the biblical gospel of grace was re-introduced to the Church at large.

The Roman Catholic Church held an almost monopolistic grip on the hearts of millions of people for hundreds of years.

Through the Dark Ages and Middle Ages, the awful legalistic system of “salvation by works” nearly choked out the light of the Gospel of the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Only small pockets of true believers in Christ escaped the dark heavy blanket of Romanism.

Then around 500 years ago came what we call the Reformation.

Men like Luther and Zwingli and Calvin and Knox, intense students of the Scriptures, rose up and shined the light of the Gospel into the darkness of European Catholicism.

These brave men brought an end to the monopoly of the Popes. They boldly proclaimed that salvation was

by grace alone, not by merit;

by faith alone, not by works;

by faith in Christ alone, not in sacraments;

under the final authority of the Word of God alone, not the unscriptural teachings of the Bishops of Rome.

  1. Manfred says:

    Post modernism has infected so much of our society and culture that many people who claim Christ exhibit more cultural perspective than biblical perspective. We must make nice with the synagogues of Satan because it’s not nice to actually note Truth and error. Most churches are head long on the road to universalism, diluting the Gospel into a man centered bit of tripe that won’t save a nickle.

    I thank the Lord for the Reformation – noting that it started many years before Martin Luther pounded on the church door.

    I think Spurgeon declared that we can never have peace with Rome. Nor with Arminianism in any form. Nor with legalism. No peace with anything other than the Biblical Gospel of Christ – the proclamation of what God has done in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  2. Most assuredly it did Manfred as all can see by studying history and not giving ear to Rome’s lies. A prime example of the light of the gospel penetrating the abject darkness of popery before Luther can be found in the latest post on Jan Hus.

  3. Manfred says:

    Amen, brother Michael. I’ll read the post on Jan Hus later. Here’s a great on-line book on Christian history: http://www.the-tribulation-network.com/ebooks/millers/toc.htm

  4. The Pilgrim says:

    Sobering article.

    Isn’t N.T. Wright (who is listed in this piece as one who teaches ‘another gospel’) the same N.T. Wright that’s been embraced by none other than John Piper?

  5. Sadly, Pilgrim, you are correct. It is the one and the same N.T. Wright endorsed by John Piper. The N.T. Wright who teaches the heresy called The New Perspective on Paul.

    Piper has also openly endorsed Douglas Wilson, who holds to another heresy called Federal Vision.

    Unfortunately, Reformed means something that many evangelicals are starting to take a second look at. It behooves each of us to study the Word of God closely and not simply buy into everything that is considered “Reformed” just so we can fit in with the current trends.

    One closing example is Mark Driscoll who is also considered to be in the “Reformed” camp.

  6. shane says:

    Galatians 3:1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?
    Galatians 3:2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
    Galatians 3:3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?

    Legalism is terrible. Actually I can’t think of a word that is “bad” enough to describe it. I was stuck in it for many years. I cannot wrap my mind around how someone that has believed in justification by faith alone can walk away from faith alone. It makes my head hurt.

    For me to know that God chose me and I didn’t choose him and I am secure in that calling makes me even more thankfull for my salvation.

    4.Here’s the “or else”: If one departs from sufficient obedience to the Law, or (in some cases) stops fellowshiping in the local assembly, they are deemed “out of the covenant”, will never be “justified”, even though they truly believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, and were in His “covenant” and were a true Christian. Their works, or lack of them, have ultimately damned them.”

    Sounds odly familiar… Could the Jehovah’s Witnesses believe something similar???? How does anyone know how many works are enough or not enough???

    I gotta go. Thinking about this is getting me worked up and I won’t be able to sleep. : )
