“Further, J. says, ‘The worship service is most satisfying to me as an individual.’ What in all eternity has that got to do with it? Have her personal likes and dislikes any right to dictate method in the holy church of God? It is this attitude that has brought hopeless confusion into our present order, for holy rolling, and snake-handling are most satisfying to some folks as individuals. Let God be true and every man a liar. Is it His way? Then let my personal likes be filed in the waste-can. Let me follow by afforded grace. It is neither J.s job nor mine to commend or condemn any system of gathering. It is the responsibility of both of us to search the Scriptural principles, find the all-important Thus saith the Lord.”

–Jim Elliott, 1927-1956

  1. Great quote by Jim Elliott. I am in complete agreement with him on this, but it is rare to find this kind of thinking in the church of today. Mostly these things are voiced but not lived out. I will study Jim and see if his life followed his writing.

  2. AMEN and AMEN! I was SO wearied in my discussions with the “elders” of my previous church when they consistently framed my charges of error as mere personal likes or dislikes. Arrggg!!

A couple of dear friends who have moved their families along with us to http://www.gracefamilybaptist.net/ keep observing how the flesh is made to squirm every Sunday under the truthful preaching of the Word of God and soul rejoices in the victory we have in Christ Jesus.

Likes and so forth? God forbid! As today’s GraceGem from http://gracegems.org/ puts it, “O Lord, we beseech You now to defend us, not only from outward adversaries–but especially from ourselves! We have foes which cleave closer to us than our very skin! We cannot escape them. Help us to elude their enticing wiles. In public and in private, when we come in or go out, whether we rise up or sit down–they cling to our heart. Deliver us from their constant baits and traps. … Our best strength–is utter weakness. Our firmest resolves–are as fleeting as the morning cloud and early dew. In our flesh there dwells no good thing–it is the vile abode of every corrupt desire. It is the den in which all vile passions lurk. Left to ourselves, we fall. But Your Spirit is omnipotent. Oh! then, bid Your Spirit to arise in all His might–and crush our indwelling opponents!”

May God be praised by His people and may we cling to His Truth and not be misled by what our flesh likes. “But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.”

I know those of you at Def Con are not that into CCM but when you posted this quote from Jim Elliot, it made me think of the new song by Sonflowerz called Legacy. (You can check it out here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_N1SkhtIVE )
It’s about her friend that was martyred in Nepal. It’s a beautiful song and in the middle she quotes Jim Elliot.

” He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose”
