I had purposed NOT to write anything about the recent “Miss USA Controversy” wherein Miss California gave a politically incorrect response to a loaded question posed to her by an openly homosexual judge. In fact I had written this entire sorry episode off in my mind as yet another manufactured faux outrage for the militant-homosexual lobby to latch upon to further their spurious agenda, and as yet another opportunity for the shameless victim-mentality religio-moralists to seize upon and cry “persecution, persecution!!” - albeit with a glimmer in their eye as they soaked up the sight of all those near-naked ladies parading their bodies around the stage, leaving little to the imagination.
But after reading a post by Ingrid Schlueter over at Slice of Laodicea I decided to share her insightful commentary for the benefit of DefCon’s readership.
In her post entitled “What Crown are we Seeking?” Ingrid rightly observes:
On the Crosstalk Show today, host Vic Eliason discussed the Miss USA controversy. The phone calls and emails received have been overwhelmingly supportive and grateful to hear someone actually speak the obvious: Public defenders of biblical morality should actually wear clothes while doing it.
It beggars belief that something so obvious must now be explained to Christians, when at one time, the world itself would have objected to Miss California’s near nudity at the pageant. The tolerance of nudity and immodesty in the world is of little surprise. That God’s people see nothing wrong with a woman professing Christ while standing nearly naked before the likes of Perez Hilton for his judgment on her “beauty” demonstrates how far down we have sunk.
God’s definition of beauty has always run absoluteley counter to that of the world. A blood-washed believer, wearing the righteousness of Christ, should care nothing for the beauty “crowns” given by the world. The only crown that we should seek after is the one that St. Paul mentioned in the Bible.
“Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”
–2 Timothy 4:8
A reader sent me the transcript of Prejean’s comment – what one group called a “bold witness.” The reader interspersed the statement with some good observations, in bold type. This is what is being called “bold” today:
“Well, I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one or the other. (Really? That’s great? It’s actually disgusting and against God’s definition of marriage. She needs to repent from such comments. She should pray for wisdom as well) Um, we live in a land that you can choose same sex marriage or opposite marriage.(Being able to “choose” shows how far our country has slid from God’s enduring commands. She should have started the sentence with “Sadly, …” In not doing so, she is sending a mixed message) And, you know what? In my country, and in my family, I think (It doesn’t matter what she thinks, or what I think. What matters is what the Word of God says about the matter) that I believe (see previous comment) that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense(Jesus was the Rock of offense, and Christian positions on topics such as gay marriage will be offensive as well. It’s an occupational hazard) to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised and that’s how I think (again, doesn’t matter what she thinks) that it should be – between a man and a woman (Biblically, the only way it can be). Thank you.”
For more on this subject from a Biblical perspective I also recommend a related post at Slice entitled Miss USA Controversy – A Pastor Responds written by Pastor Larry DeBruyn of Franklin Road Baptist Church in Indianapolis, IN.
It’s simply shocking how so many are applauding a woman who wears bikinis in a vanity contest.
Thank you Coram for standing up for the truth on this matter. As Kevin mentions, it is appalling that a woman willing to parade her body just for an earthly crown is concerned about “morality.” Of course, there are many who claim the name of Christ who had no qualms watching her parade with lust in their hearts or eyes and then have the audacity to think she was giving forth a “good testimony” for Jesus Christ because of a rather loose answer on the issue of homosexuality and marriage!
The Desert Pastor
Coram-
I praise the Lord for your discernment on this matter and for standing correctly in truth. I am amazed at those who’ve applauded this woman and embraced her as some kind of ‘Christian voice’ on national tv.
It appears many are so desperate to cling to any type of morals in America they’ll overlook one sin in order to lash out at another. This young woman spoke her opinion {no scripture was given by her to back what she said} concerning homosexual marriage {and rightly so}, then she flaunted her mostly naked body across a stage on national television causing the sin of lust to raise it’s ugly head everywhere. So, do we applaud her stance against homosexual marriage and wink at her sin of stirring lust and immodest dress?
Why isn’t 1 Timothy 2:9 brought to light? Is the sin of lust less offensive to God than the sin of homosexuality?
These are questions that came to mind as I read through another Christian blog.
Again, thank you for this post. I am also thankful to Ingrid for her stance and pray for her. She has come under fire as of late and should be encouraged by fellow believers.
Interesting comments, for – seeing as how our message this past Sunday was on Matthew 5:27-30! We were reminded/admonished that while we should take appropriate measures to shield ourselves from temptation, external measures are not the solution. Sin comes from within and as was revealed when Saddam Hussein’s HQ was taken – having women covered from head to toe does not keep men from lusting for women and seeking to satisfy their lust by “possessing” women virtually – via porn.
Christian women ought to dress modestly. Amen! My church is a safe place form men because the women understand this. Men ought to train themselves to not “track” women. My church is a safe place for women because the men understand this.
All Christians need to vigorously pursue Christ because He alone is our strong tower of refuge and He alone can withstand temptation and defeat sin.
Kevin, TDP, lyn, Manfred,
Amen and amen! It’s spiritually schizophrenic to pretend to be a martyr for morality while parading around mostly naked on national television in front of millions of wide-eyed viewers. But I’m sure those watching were only interested in the talent and Q&A portions of the “contest”, just like those who subscribe to pornographic magazines only do so to “read the articles”.
In Him,

CD – What’s in those magazines other than the articles????
(sorry – it just slipped out :-)
