Sam and Esther: The least of these.

Reminiscent of the helplessness I felt watching the video of Africa’s Witch Children, this video broke me. I never wept so much over the suffering of the children in Africa, and at the same time been so angered at my own gluttony, selfishness, and daily ungratefulness. Lord forgive me.

My prayers for God to use me and my family in Africa will now be taking on a whole new fervency.

  1. The Pilgrim,

Thanks for putting this video on DefCon! I too am ashamed that far too often we ignore the cries for help from other lands and turn our backs because we are not the ones who have been “called” to the mission field. May the Lord Jesus Christ be praised in all things through the endeavors of all who work towards giving forth the words of life to those who have never heard before.

  2. Just one more reason to hate the spirit that makes people–especially those in the church–bow down at the altar of companies like Abercrombie & Fitch, and Aeropostale, and Hollister. That makes parents feel the need to spend more on one stupid t-shirt for their kids with some stupid name on it than many people spend on food for a month. That same spirit fills our church parking lots with shiny new Hummers and Mercedes. This spirit gives power to such groups as TBN, and heretics like Creflo Dollar and Kenneth Copeland.

We talk about Laodicea so many times. What did our Lord tell them? “Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked” (Revelation 3:18). While the church in America is busy hoarding for themselves all the wealth they can, building gawdy mansions as a legacy to men, “the least of these” go without even a crumb. We get angry with our waiter because he forgot to tell the cook to leave the pickle off of our hamburger–and these children would give anything for that pickle that we will throw away.

I better stop there before I say something I’ll regret.

Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus–Philippians 2:4-5

I am shamed and humbled. So heartbreaking. How spoiled we are while this happens daily in third world countries. I cannot say anymore at the moment. Thanks for this video, it is a wakeup call

  4. coorston says:

I too was brought to tears watching this video.

I think this video bring an excellent and very important point, though. To me, this type of video and realization brings humanity together. It forces us to realize and admit how petty our differences really are.

You probably noticed the involvement of the San Damiano Foundation, a Catholic organization. And the villiage2villiage project makes no claim of religious affiliation.

There is so much in the world that is THOUSANDS of times more important that religious bickering. I just wish I (we) could live in a world where there was less of that and more of seeing people unite for a common good.

I just wanted to say that…

    thanks

  5. lyn says:

One of the purposes of this video was to awaken us to horrific situations like this; to reach out and help, as the Lord leads,& to pray for those who make this their life mission. It is a reminder of how we need to be thankful for the physical needs our Lord so graciously meets.
This is NOT about embracing other religions, or uniting for the ‘common good’. True born from above believers cannot embrace all forms of religion. The common good is NOT what Christ has called His true followers to embrace. A happy, ‘let’s all just get along’ mentality will assuredly lead one down the broad road.
The Catholic organization that reaches out to these children are meeting their physical needs, may the Lord be praised. However, their spiritual needs go unnoticed. They need to hear the Gospel of Christ, the TRUE HOPE, not a temporary fix. The false doctrine of the RCC will save no soul…no matter how many children they feed and clothe, all their righteous acts are like filthy rags.

Pilgrim, thank you for this heartbreaking post.

  6. looseassociations says:

i was especially touched by the nature of the older sister jane… i pray they (3) are eventually re-united.

but i most especially pray that these children hear the GOSPEL; otherwise, the crackers, the re-rehabilitation, the new homes… are all but filthy dung, of no lasting value to anyone.

  7. wearymom says:

    lyn,

Thank you for pointing that. I feel the same. The physical needs are very important and we should do all we can as Christians to reach out and help suffering people around the world. But, we must always remember that it is where these souls will spend eternity that is even more important. We can’t just meet physical needs. We give the gospel as well. This idea that all religions must come together to wipe out poverty…save the world is… that will never happen. Poverty will be with us until the Lord returns. As long as there are greedy, sinful people in the world, there will be poverty. We can’t wipe it out. We can fight it while at the same time giving out the gospel message…that is our mandate from God. We can’t create heaven on earth by uniting all religions. Uniting all religions is what the anti-christ will do.

  8. Amen lyn and wearymom.

Any person with even a tinge of human compassion would be touched by the video, it’s very moving, but it was designed to be so. I couldn’t help but notice the absolute lack of the gospel, so I visited Village2Village and the homepage of its founder, and read extensively, but never saw the gospel, not even once.

Of course the film was made by a Franciscan Catholic group, and we know they preach another gospel which is anathema. In fact the narrator took care to cast dispersions upon those who, in his opinion, needlessly argue about doctrinal fine points, when all we really need to do is “come together”. This is perhaps the most troubling part, for there are those who will compass land and sea to make a disciple, making their proselytes twice the sons of hell as they themselves. May the Lord of the harvest send forth faithful workmen into His fields.

    In Christ,
    CD

  9. coorston says:

I can not believe what some of you seem to be saying. Of course I may be misreading…

    so blunt question…

which is more important? Helping them with their physical needs or bringing them the (your preferred) gospel?

I mean like, If you could only do one? which would it be????

  10. looseassociations says:

    coorston,

perhaps you should ask your question whether it is more important to live 90 happy healthy years and suffer the eternal wrath of God, or suffer for a few years but not think much about it 5.3 trillion years later?

of course we need to help each other with our physical needs! but our spiritual needs are dramatically more important. this is, of course, not evident to those who are spiritually blind, thus compounding the urgency of their own situation.

you might need more help than sammy and esther… consider???? the FATTEST, RICHEST, HEALTHIEST, most selfish glutton in the USA almost certainly needs more help than sammy and esther, and i don’t see anyone crying about him??? helping him??? where’s our charity???

    paul

  11. lyn says:

No one here is condemning the physical needs being met. BUT, the greater need is for the soul to be saved. Time on this earth is fleeting, all human life is a mist, a vapor. In addition to feeding these children and providing medical attention, the Gospel of Christ should be given. These children will grow up, and, God willing, live to an old age. They will be thankful for the helping hand they once received. But, if and when they reach their elder years and pass from this life to the next…what good will that physical need have done? Their souls have been spiritually starved, to the point of eternal death. This is MUCH more heartbreaking than what the above video portrays. I do wish we had a video of a lost soul suffering in outer darkness, forever separated from God. The wailing would pierce the human ear.
Again, do NOT read something into anyone’s post that isn’t there. NO ONE is saying feeding these children is wrong. We should help children like Sam and Esther, as well as provide proper medical attention. But, our Lord expects us to give them Bread from heaven, which is everlasting. They will eat crackers, and be hungry again. When they taste the Bread from heaven, then they will know truly what satisfies.

  12. jude newman says:

We can give people food and they will be hungry again. We feed them with the gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and they will never thirst again. And Jesus said to them. ” I am the bread of life. He who comes to me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” John 6:35. Coorston, I can understand that for anyone who doesn’t know Jesus, today’s needs are the most important thing. To a born again Christian we look at eternity. Our hope and faith are on eternity. This is a terrible hard world and if this was all there was well then, Eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we die. I used to think like this. If you were lost at sea, and were found and they could only do one thing for you, what would you rather, be fed or rescued. This life is so short. Eternity is forever

  13. coorston says:

first of all it takes action not prayer. Prayer does nothing.

second, i don’t even know where to begin! people are suffering! they need help not bible stories! I never thought I would have a discussion like this!

    I’m flabbergasted….

I’ve seen on this website, some of you ask “where do atheists get their morality from?”

interestingly, I’d say that any atheist I know has a higher moral standard than many of you!

sorry but that’s the way I see it…

  14. coorston,

As I have mentioned to another person who commented, you are free to disagree with our position. However, we are here to defend the truth of God’s Word and to contend for the faith which was once delivered to the saints. As the apostle Paul wrote in the book of First Corinthians, “if in this life only, we have hope, we are of all men most miserable.”

While you are free to disagree with us, you will not be allowed to use this particular blog to defend your own misguided thoughts in regards to the truth of God’s Word and Christianity. Too often, we find people stopping by only to find something with which they think they can pick a fight. I am not speaking out of hatred in anyway when I share with you that you would do well to remember that you are a guest here.

In regards to the story of Sam and Esther, you would be hard pressed to find a group of people with a true heart for missions and the needs of a dying world than here at this site. The bottom line is that we have eternity in perspective, whereas, you appear to think that you feed a person some crackers that all will be well with them. The world’s religions damn the souls of mankind to a Christ-less eternity.

Biblical Christianity is about teaching others that there is a Saviour Who came to redeem the souls of ALL who come by grace through faith alone and trust Him with their eternal salvation. If a person dies with a full stomach and without Christ, they will go to hell to be judged for their sins forever. If a person dies with an empty stomach but with faith in the atoning work of Christ Jesus on the cross of Calvary, they will be with God forever because Jesus Christ was judged and was the Perfect Sinbearer for all who believe.

Eternity awaits, coorston! Which side will you fall on? ALL will stand before God. Few will be welcomed with Him as their Saviour, the vast majority follow the road to destruction because it is wide and the end result is that Jesus Christ, the God of heaven will be the Perfect Judge. Because He is not only a God of love, but is also a God of perfect justice, justice will be served! It will be a tragic day, and a few small crackers will no longer be a consolation.

  15. coorston says:

This thread started as a man literally crying as he saw the suffering of fellow man, and committing himself to do something to help people like this in obvious need. This thread turned into not caring as much about their suffering as about weather or not they have heard the gospel. this is tragically shameful!!!

Notice who helped them. The folks who made that video actually did something and quite possibly SAVED THEIR LIVES!!! I don’t care about their beliefs!

You would almost certainly NOT be willing to donate ONE RED CENT to these people’s organizations over arguments over religious dogma regardless of the good that they do.

It is better in your minds to pray that god does something or guides you or “calls you” to do something or other.

It would be an act of absolute IMMORALITY to not do anything but pray while you may in fact have the time, money, ability or means to do something… I mean actually DO something to help these people (or other people) in such desperate need.

So, after all of this… my challenge…

What are YOU going to do????

I’m doing something right now. It’s not much but what i can afford…

  16. coorston,

Thanks for your reply. You have completely misunderstood the nature of the comments by myself and probably others in regards to the plight of Sam and Esther along with many other children who are in the same pitiful condition every day of the week in some little known places around the world.

Let’s try to set the record straight as you have obviously missed our purposes here at DefCon. 1) We care very much for the poor and hungry around the world. 2) It is our desire to do more than we are doing which I will only briefly elaborate on. 3) We care that others suffer; however, the reason that people suffer is because of sin!

The Word of God states, “What shall it profit a man if he shall gain the world, and yet lose his soul?” We care about BOTH the physical AND spiritual needs.

As for donating to these particular organizations, the issue is whether we would willingly support groups that are diametrically opposed to the truths of God’s Word and that to some degree would actually be opposed to giving both physical food as well as spiritual. For instance, there are not just Catholic organizations, but Mormons, Buddhists, etc. that all have organizations that seek the common good of mankind, and no we would not support them financially when there are other organizations that we would AND do support!

This has NOTHING to do with praying that God will “guide” or “call” us to do “something or other.” We believe the Word of God is clear on the duty of man and that we should seek to help others in as many ways as possible. If we have it in our power to feed or clothe or provide medical assistance to a hungry, naked or sick individual and do not do so, we have broken the second of the two great commandments given by Jesus Christ and that is to LOVE THY NEIGHBOR AS THYSELF!

coorston, you assume that we are doing nothing and in that you would be GREATLY amiss. All that we are doing is not for public knowledge for that would be to trumpet our own accomplishments. We normally prefer our gifts to remain anonymous so that God alone receives the glory for all that is done. However, I will state that monies both personally and directly from our churches go to support the need in places like Uganda, Africa. We are also in the process of providing clothing and monies that provides medical assistance even to people that do not believe EXACTLY like us. Finally, our goal that we are presently working towards involves removing at least two of the editors of this blog AND their families and moving to West Africa to assist in the work of taking care of orphans, providing homes, clothing and food, AS WELL as ministering the good news of Jesus Christ!

I hope this more than answers your questions and your “challenge.” By the way, we have been doing something for several years even when it is not convenient or even what many would consider affordable!

  17. looseassociations says:

    dear coorston,

you’re an atheist on a Christian blog. hence, no surprise that you’re flabbergasted. the pharisees didn’t understand a single thing that Jesus said. those whose native language is the lie cannot comprehend the truth. the darkness cannot comprehend the light.

sorry to word it like this, but your kind of “love” is ultimately only capable of patting people’s backs all the way into hell. it’s not really love at all.

and don’t forget… “this thread started” because a CHRISTIAN had a heart for sam and esther’s circumstances, and we all resonated with that concern.

that we care for the children’ SOULS as well as their BODIES does not mean that we care about their BODIES less than you do. so your morality is confused. but you couldn’t possibly have morality proper, because your morality is relative. if you were born in nazi germany, you would simply float with the winds of the current culture, and you would hate Jews like 90% of the rest of them.

without the absolute truth of the Bible, and the working of the Holy Spirit in your heart, you are an empty husk, no matter how much “morality” you claim.

    paul

  18. lyn says:

Coorston- you asked, ‘what are you going to do?’…I answer; I am going to pray for salvation of the souls of these children, and the members of the Catholic organization that reached out to them.

What about you Coorston? What will you do when your day of departure comes? It is closer now than ever; you can deny, kick and scream; but you will stand before God and you will be punished for your unrepentant sin. I pray God will pour out His grace on you, that you will see your sins for what they are, crimes against a Holy God. May you cry out to Him for mercy and forgiveness. Jesus Christ suffered on a cross and paid for sin for all who would repent and believe in Him. May this be the day of your new birth, may Jesus Christ be your all in all.

  19. coorston said: To me, this type of video and realization brings humanity together.

Humanity is already brought together, coorston. Fallen humanity stands together, dead in sins and trespasses, abiding under the burning wrath of the absolutely holy, holy, holy One True and Living God Almighty, the infinite Creator and Judge of the universe.

Humanity stands together in total opposition to the One True and Living God and His Christ, the Savior and sacrificial Lamb of God, the Lord Jesus.

Jesus Christ died a horrific death on a cruel Roman cross to be the sin-bearer of fallen humanity, yet fallen humanity makes a mockery of Him and reviles and rejects Him which thing offends God Almighty beyond comprehension.

Fallen humanity stands together guilty of violating the One True and Living God’s holy law, which thing is an infinite offense against His infinitely perfect Person, and is therefore deserving of infinite punishment.

It’s ironic that you express such moral outrage at the plight of those poor children, and their plight in the video is pitiful, but you ignore your own more serious plight which is the fact that you have personally outraged the One True and Living God, your Maker and Judge, and your end – lest you repent – is eternal destruction in hell fire forever. At this moment in time your plight is much more urgent and disastrous than Sam and Esther’s.

Have you ever told a lie, coorston? Have you ever looked lustfully upon a woman with your eyes? Have you ever taken anything that didn’t belong to you? Have you ever been angry at another person without a reason?

I know you have. And this means in the One True and Living God’s eyes you are a lying, sexually immoral, thieving murderer. Tell us coorston, based on these facts why would anyone here, or anywhere else, believe that you have any moral grounds whatsoever from which to pontificate? Why should we take morality lessons from a lying, thieving, sexually immoral murderer like you?

You are personally guilty of offending the One True and Living God. You are personally guilty of consciously disobeying Him. You are personally guilty of suppressing God’s truth in unrighteousness because you love a lie.

And this is the saddest part, you know what I’m telling you is true. You know it’s true because your Creator placed the truth inside your heart and you can’t escape it. He created all human beings in His image, and as His image bearers they can never escape Him, so they try to suppress their knowledge of Him.

You abide under God’s wrath and you are already judged guilty because you are without Jesus Christ and without hope. You have an angry God above you, you have a nagging conscience inside of you constantly waving its accusing finger in your face crying “guilty, Guilty, GUILTY”, and you have a yawning, fiery hell beneath you, and you know it. In your heart of hearts you know it. In your quiet moments when no one is around, and it’s just you and God you know it.

I know my words are true not because I have any testimony to their truth in and of myself, and not because my own witness is inherently reliable or truthful, but rather I know my words are true because they reflect the Word of God as He has given it in the 66 books of the Holy Bible which is the One True and Living God’s unique revelation to men of Himself. God’s Holy Word testifies to the truth of the words I’m presenting to you, coorston.

There are exactly two races upon the earth – the redeemed race that belongs to Jesus Christ, and everyone else. And there are exactly two religions on earth; on one side there is the true and pure religion of Biblical Christianity which is based upon God’s merit in Christ proclaiming what God has done for those who believe in Christ, and on the other side there is the false religion of man’s merit in man which is based upon whatever “good” (so-called) that man does for whatever “god” he happens to worship, yet that “god” is nothing but an idol contrived by fallen man’s desperately sinful and hopelessly wicked heart. All false religions are simply streams and variants of the one false religion of human merit. In fact at the root of all variants of the one false religion (which includes every religion apart from Biblical Christianity) we find that the true object of worship is self. This includes the religion of atheism which dispenses with man-made external “gods” altogether and simply exalts man (self) apart from any external reference point. In all these cases man deifies man and this is the reason the only true Deity, the Lord God Almighty, will justly damn their souls to hell forever.

Repent coorston. Your only hope is to deny yourself, turn away from your haughty and arrogant pride, and humble yourself before the One True and Living God. If you refuse His command to repent, then you will die in your sins and be justly condemned by your Maker forever.

    In Christ,
    CD

  20. John 6:26-29–Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”

Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”

The work of God is not just meeting people’s physical needs. It is giving them the words of eternal life.

Consider the story of the rich man and the beggar:

Luke 16:19-23–“There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day. But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.”

Who do you think had it better? The rich man who ate well for a few years–yet faced an eternity in Hell after he died?

Or the beggar who probably fought dogs for scraps–yet will spend an eternity in the presence of the Lord?
