Welcome to “Christianity” in 2009.

*** UPDATE: THE VIDEO IS BACK UP AND CAN BE VIEWED AGAIN ***

When the shepherds of the Church forgo the preaching of the Gospel and resort to appealing to the lost through emotion and entertainment, they are left breathless having to keep coming up with new material to attract and retain the goats they’ve herded into their country clubs with steeples.

But when you’re really hurting to attract people and you’ve run out of ideas, you could always resort to groveling. This video is an example of what happens when goat herders stop relying on preaching the Gospel that saves people, and instead opt for every possible form of manipulation.   What an absolute embarrassment.

Slice of Laodicea weighs in on this foolishness quite aptly:

“When you see videos like the one below, it is difficult to imagine that Christianity used to produce some of the finest minds in the world. The brilliance of men like John Owen and Jonathan Edwards who submitted their minds to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, continues to shine down through the centuries. Harvard and Yale were at one time Christian institutions, dedicated to the Gospel and developing minds to the glory of God.

Fast forward to 2009 and the rotting corpse of Western Christianity. This buffoonery is what now fills churches today—the entire idiotic scene inspired by a children’s cartoon of singing and dancing vegetables. Infantalism rules, literacy is dead, and God-given intellects are dead, suffocated under years of video game playing, movie and television watching. Hard to believe that Christians used to produce books like “Bondage of the Will”, and translations of the Scriptures from the original languages. Today, pastors and church laity are reading “graphic novel” (comic book) versions of the Bible because they struggle to grasp anything beyond a one syllable word. Here are some of evangelicalism’s finest in action. Watch and weep.”

  1. Private video… Can’t be viewed.

  2. hmm I clicked on the video and it said “This is a private video. If you have been sent this video, please make sure you accept the sender’s friend request.

  3. And once again “Christians” put out a video only to block or remove it when it gets criticized. You can no longer view it on Slice either.

I wonder why the need to prevent others from seeing it now if it was such a good idea to begin with.

  4. I saw this before it was removed. It was nothing more than a terribly sad attempt by man to draw people into church, to fill up the pews. They offered to rake your leaves, cook you a meal, do the dishes, pick you up for church, shovel your snow, cut your grass, whatever it takes to get you to come to church…you get the picture. I shudder to think what Almighty God’s reaction is.

    Here’s what they didn’t offer…the Gospel.

  5. I have a couple of thoughts, but not having seen the video, I’m not sure if this is true. I’m hoping that whoever made this video had parody/satire in mind in criticizing “pastors who will do anything.” While the video may be satire (again, not sure, but I’m hoping this is the case), it certainly has a ring of truth that there are indeed some churches/pastors will do just about anything to bring people into their churches.

My other thought had more to do with Slice’s commentary. He/She states “Fast forward to 2009 and the rotting corpse of Western Christianity. This buffoonery is what now fills churches today…” I think such a statement is a little more than sensationalism. While there is certainly apostasy within the church, just as there has been for hundreds of years, Western Christianity is far from dead, much less “rotting.” For every bit of high-profile idiocy put out by apostates, I’m sure there are many more churches and pastors who are standing firm in the faith. Such exaggerated hyperbole should not be resorted to simply to make a point.

  6. “I think such a statement is a little more than sensationalism. While there is certainly apostasy within the church, just as there has been for hundreds of years, Western Christianity is far from dead, much less “rotting.””

    Indeed, Well said Stephen. :)

While I agree that much of the Church of America is lax and is in need of serious revival, We should always remember that God knows His own, and their deeds are many times what He uses to bring others to Him. (Not talking about the video though, as I haven’t seen it….lol)

    God bless, everyone!

  7. As a follow up, the video has been reopened with the following comments, which seem to support the “parody” theory:

“We apologize for turning off the commenting functionality. We did not want this video, created as an inside joke for our church family, to be used as a display of infighting within the Christian church. Thank you to everyone who responded in a respectful manner. For further information on why this video was produced, the audience it was aimed at, and what the ministry of Mount Hope Church is really about, please read the “more info” section at right.

“In the spirit of Proverbs 17:22 and Romans 12:3, some of the pastors at Mount Hope Church parody the Veggie Tales’ silly song “The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything” to provide a laugh for our congregation on New Year’s Eve 2008.

While we don’t actually provide any of the services we sing about, we do financially support widows, give coats to kids living in poverty, bus in children to attend children’s services, feed the hungry twice weekly, and cooperate with other area churches to provide food for families who need it. 8. With all due respect, what Ingrid was referring to was the sweeping apostasy that permeates American churches, and she’s right. The true church of Christ is not included in her remark; God has always had a remnant of believers, even to this day.
After viewing the video firsthand, I assure you this video was not made with parody/satire in mind. It was painful to watch.
You could walk in to almost any church in America on any given Sunday and find all kinds of man-made ignorance. Within many of the Southern Baptist churches, you’ll hear people being coaxed to repeat a prayer, or make their decision for Jesus, they are told to simply invite Him into their heart. Other churches resort to theatrics and entertainment; whatever the tactic, you can be sure it is man-made. What is the point? To fill the pews, which in turn fills the collection plates.
We must not bury our heads in the sand to the deception and heresy we are surrounded by…yes, it has always been and will be until the Lord returns.
There are still some churches who are true to God’s word, led by Godly men who fear the Lord, who preach His word out of reverence. These types of churches dot the landscape of America, and God’s true children are in them. Overall, the majority of churches in this nation are apostate and man-centered. Churches like Joel Osteens’, which boast of thousands of members, folks drawn in by the candy-coated message.
Pastor Paul Washer nailed it on the head concerning false teachers and their flock in saying this, “Their god is their belly, but, they look like sheep; how is that? How is it that they look like sheep? By their flattering, smooth speech that in an age of tolerance makes you think they are men most full of love.
They will never contradict, they will never create a scandal, they will never be offensive, they will never speak forth things to anger men. They have the smooth tongue of a serpent, and they flatter men, and they give carnal men exactly what they want.
Let me tell you something about false teachers, you think so many times that people fall prey to false teachers, and that, in a sense, can be true, at times. But, I think the dominant theme in scripture is just the opposite. False teachers are God’s judgment on people who don’t want God…but, in the name of religion, plan on getting everything their carnal heart desires.
That’s why a Joel Osteen is raised up; those people who sit under him are not victims of him, he is the judgment of God upon them…because they want exactly what he wants, and it’s not God!”

  9. “After viewing the video firsthand, I assure you this video was not made with parody/satire in mind.”

    Did you read Stephen’s post?

  10. Yes, I did. My response is this– if their statement is true,’created as an inside joke for our church family,’ then why was it posted on youtube? It’s always easy to cover up our mishaps by saying, after the fact, what our intentions were.
Whatever their intentions were, even as a inside joke, do you think it’s funny? Is it funny that American Christianity is in a shambles? Is it funny that we may joke about the length some go to for converts? Do you think the Lord Jesus Christ is pleased with this ‘parody’?

Let’s remember this from 1st Corinthians 10:31, ‘Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or WHATEVER YOU DO, do all to the glory of God.’

May we all, by His grace, bring glory to Him this day.

    look,

    I can accept that explanation.

but still, they should have explained themselves a little more when they first put this up

  12. If I may interject . . .

I humbly submit to you all this question:
Are we done laughing, joking, and having a grand old time?

It seems that that’s all that American Christianity is about; comedy, music, and entertainment. When do we ever get serious?

It’s difficult to go from a 1/2 hour of pastor jokes and stories coupled with entertaining videos displayed on the jumbo screen only to (at the end of the service) dim the lights, play soft music, and manipulate the emotions of the crowd to come “give your heart to Jesus.”

If the time was not spent making people realize their need for a Savior, but instead it was spent saying “look how cool and relevant we are; you too can be like us,” then we must stop wondering why there’s so many false converts out there. The answer is pretty plain to see.

I for one am growing tired of the world looking at Christ’s bride (or what is purported to be Christ’s Bride) and seeing a bunch of goofing off, satire, juvenile antics, and potty humor. And not seeing a truly changed, truly holy, truly sacrificing Church; a Church serious about the reality of Life and Death, Heaven and Hell.

With videos like the one in question, does a dying world desperate for a Savior look at that and say “I am not worthy, Lord, save me a wretched sinner?” No. More often than not they shake their heads and snicker at us with contempt.

It all makes me long for the preachers and churches of years gone by.

    Just a thought.

Also, regarding the video specifically: After mentioning all the things they’ll “do” to get people to church, they failed to mention the one TRUE thing that works . . . preaching the Gospel.

After all, it’s God who “adds to the Church” not our man-made, purpose-driven techniques, nor our enticing, begging, groveling or even giving away free gas.

All of this reminds me of the words of Jesus in Matthew 23:15:

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel around on sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.

    - The Pilgrim

  13. It is heartbreaking that so many view this video and see nothing wrong with it. This is more evidence that American Christianity is in dire straits.

In response to this statement from this church, ‘we do financially support widows, give coats to kids living in poverty, bus in children to attend children’s services,
feed the hungry twice weekly, and cooperate with other area churches to provide food for families who need it’…what about what Christ teaches in Matthew 6:1-4, Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. Therefore when thou doest [thine] alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.’

How is God glorified in this video? Where is His Holy Name exalted?
Whether this heresy was produced to entertain [sic] folks, or to spoof other churches, neither of these motives are glorifying to God. If the Lord God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked, why would He be amused over the apostasy and deception in false churches? It is heartbreaking to think many people are on the broad road, and we make light of it!!!!
Where is the reverence for a Holy, Holy, Holy God?

  14. Did anybody else notice that two of the “pastors” were women?

We are the pastors who will do anything!
Even reject the clear mandates for church eldership!!

  15. “Whatever their intentions were, even as a inside joke, do you think it’s funny?”

Uh….yeah. It’s obviously meant as satire. Even though it’s an inside joke i got it.

“Is it funny that we may joke about the length some go to for converts?”

There is a time for laughter. These pastors kept it clean.
You also forget that Christ used humor in many of the statements he made mocking the Pharisees.

“Do you think the Lord Jesus Christ is pleased with this ‘parody’?”

Do you think he’s pleased with your constant posting on this site? Aren’t you wasting time? Where is it written that you can’t make a satrical parody, especially when Christ used satire?

“May we all, by His grace, bring glory to Him this day.”

    Amen.

  16. “There is a time for laughter. These pastors kept it clean.
You also forget that Christ used humor in many of the statements he made mocking the Pharisees.” Do you have scripture to support this? Did Christ really make light of the poor state of the church?

Now, I ask again, Do you think the Lord Jesus Christ is pleased with this ‘parody’?

Instead of blowing off the question with this type of flippant answer, “Do you think he’s pleased with your constant posting on this site? Aren’t you wasting time? Where is it written that you can’t make a satrical parody, especially when Christ used satire?”

Here is how Christ reacted when He went to the temple, ‘And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves’ Matt. 21:12
    I don’t see much ‘satire’ there…
When a church is run like a circus, it is NOT pleasing to God. You can defend it if you like; may God be merciful to this type of superficial Christianity and all who defend it.

  17. “Do you have scripture to support this?”

Glad you asked. :) Here’s a link that explains it in some detail:

    http://www.biblestudy.org/basicart/how-did-jesus-use-humor-to-teach-about-god.html

And how is my question flippant? You are not spreading the Gospel right now by posting in response to me. Indeed, are you reaching anyone or bringing honor to God by posting? Answer my question, “Aren’t you wasting time? Is God honored by this?

It’s not flippant, it’s very serious.

As to is God pleased, God made humor, Jesus used it. As far as I’m concerned, God could care less about a 3 minute video made by a Church that actually works to feed and clothe the poor. Sorry, I still find nothing heretical here.

    “I don’t see much ’satire’ there…”

If we’re going to go into what Jesus meant by “den of thieves” Then by necessity we need to damn Whitefield and Spurgeon as both used either humor or theatrics in their sermons.

    That’s my two cents.

    God Bless.

  18. You accuse me of wasting time. what are you doing!!

I didn’t ask for a link, I asked for you to give scripture, where does Jesus Christ use satire when referencing to the state of the church?
I never claimed to be spreading the Gospel in these posts, that’s not what we are discussing. We are discussing this short video that either makes fun of Christianity, or is a desperate attempt to lure people to church.
So….God made humor, and you classify this video has humor? Again I ask, do you think a Holy God is smiling when He sees a group of individuals either stooping to low levels to drum up church attendance, or poking fun at the sad state of Christianity? Do you honestly think Almighty God is smiling over this??!!! Is this considered entertainment to a Holy God?

Should we all just ‘lighten up’ and act like buffoons, dancing around singing silly little songs, throw the TRUE GOSPEL out the window and just make a mockery of everything? Whoops, that’s already being done, and droves of people defend it…but, the bible said this would happen, the falling away, the tickling of the ear, anything goes, as long as we label it with ‘Jesus’.

Only God can grant discernment, those who think it’s okay to spoof the sad state of American Christianity are worse off than the ones who do the spoofing.

  19. “You accuse me of wasting time. what are you doing!!”

I did not. I asked are you bringing glory to God by posting here. Stop redirecting my question.

“I didn’t ask for a link, I asked for you to give scripture,”

If you would actually read the link, you would see plenty of Scripture to back this up. But I’ll post one here for you:

“John 15:7 “there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.”

    Sarcasm. There you go. :)

“We are discussing this short video that either makes fun of Christianity, or is a desperate attempt to lure people to church.”

Or is it possible that it’s just an inside joke that pokes fun at those who actually do these things? Or just a video made for fun? Why do you automatically assume that they’re making fun of everything that’s holy?

“Again I ask, do you think a Holy God is smiling when He sees a group of individuals either stooping to low levels to drum up church attendance, or poking fun at the sad state of Christianity?”

I already answered your question. And again, they were not doing either. They were making a video for fun, THAT’S ALL.

“Should we all just ‘lighten up’ and act like buffoons, dancing around singing silly little songs, throw the TRUE GOSPEL out the window and just make a mockery of everything?”

How is making a 3 minute video for fun making a mockery of everything? How do you know they are throwing the Gospel out the window? Please, let us not be so hasty to damn every Church that does something humorous.

“Only God can grant discernment, those who think it’s okay to spoof the sad state of American Christianity are worse off than the ones who do the spoofing.”

Jesus spoofed the relgiousity of His day. And these pastors weren’t doing that. Sorry.

    God bless.

  20. You said, ‘You also forget that Christ used humor in many of the statements he made mocking the Pharisees.” So, I asked for proof from the Bible, and you come up with this verse, ‘“John 15:7 “there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.”———-I do not see the connection, at all. Nowhere does that verse imply Jesus Christ has a sense of humor!

Then, your exact words, “Do you think he’s pleased with your constant posting on this site? Aren’t you wasting time? ”
I respond with, ‘“You accuse me of wasting time. what are you doing!!”
You twist it all by saying, ‘I did not. I asked are you bringing glory to God by posting here. Stop redirecting my question.’

You throw this into the pot, ‘You are not spreading the Gospel right now by posting in response to me. Indeed, are you reaching anyone or bringing honor to God by posting?”——–Again, let me ask, are you?

It’s time for me to get off your twisted merry go round. You need to move on sir.

  21. We can argue all day about the video. Neither side will convince the other. But I still pose the question that I did in my previous comment:

Are we done laughing, joking, and having a grand old time?

When are we going to stop treating Life and Death, Heaven and Hell with such flippancy and lightheartedness?

People are going to Hell without Jesus, and many are going to Hell with a false Jesus and the church can only find time to make cool, hip, and (like this one) “funny” videos.

I also again have to ask, what do you think a dying world thinks when they see this? I think the video found on the post A Scathing Blow to the Wishy-Washy Emergent Church Sugar-Coated, Ear-Candy Preaching so Popular Today is an answer to that question.

I know that John Piper has taken a lot of heat lately for his teaming up with Mark “The Cussing Pastor” Driscoll, but a little while back I posted a snippet from one of his sermons that I wish more church goers would listen to, especially the happy-clappy super-sappy everything’s-a-big-joke Christians.

I strongly urge you all to check out that sermon snippet. You can find it on the post Suffering Christianity vs Chipper Christianity. Please prayerfully consider my point and the thrust of Piper’s message before arguing further in defense of the above video.

    Thank you.
    Sincerely,
    - The Pilgrim

  22. “I do not see the connection, at all. Nowhere does that verse imply Jesus Christ has a sense of humor!”

think about it. What sinner does not need repentance? Don’t you see the irony in his tone?

“You twist it all by saying, ‘I did not. I asked are you bringing glory to God by posting here. Stop redirecting my question.’”

I did not accuse you. I asked “Aren’t you wasting time?” You have not answered the question. Don’t defer by saying I accused you, especially when you accused me of defending superficial christianity.

“Again, let me ask, are you?”

You did NOT ask me that. Indeed, you have not answered my question. Are you bringing glory to God by posting here? I answered your question about God being pleased or not.

“It’s time for me to get off your twisted merry go round. You need to move on sir.”

Lol, we all do. This just shows how much of a waste of time this is.

    Anyway, God bless.

    _______________________________________________________________

    Pilgrim,

Thank you for approaching this in a calm, respectful, way.

I will consider the points you’ve made. Please don’t write them off as a Church that doesn’t take anything seriously, that’s all I’m saying.

Again, sorry to have caused any offense, and thanks again.

    God bless.

  23. I will be publishing a post soon on more of this related topic. It will contain a dozen videos from a “church” and I’m sure it will only serve to rekindle the debate.

Those who have a low view of holiness, proper conduct, etc. will accept much more and tolerate much more of the antics that take place in the name of Christianity whereas those who hold the things of God in a much higher light will never find much of the modern American church’s behavior acceptable.

I, for one, have been on both sides. I used to be on the everything goes side as long as the label “Christian” was slapped on it. I can no longer cling to that way of thinking. I live differently than I once did during my time as a false convert. My behavior is now different. My lifestyle is now different. I am now different.

I remember as a baskslidden false convert (don’t laugh) going to many churches hoping to be roused out of the spiritual funk that my stagnant religion of emotion-led and feelings-based conversion eventually brought me to.

Church after church I hoped the pastor would preach a convicting, heart-stirring sermon. But what I got was an entertaining, placating, sugary, sappy, upbeat, positive, seeker-sensitive lecture on such things as the five life lessons of David and how if I applied these simple steps to my life I too could live victorious.

I needed the Gospel. What I got was carnal Christianity wrapped in man’s wisdom using the world’s methods.

It is much the reason why I lament the behavior seen in videos like the one in this post. A dying world desperately needs the Gospel. But when they turn to the Church they see videos like this and they walk away unchanged, unconverted, and now turned off to Christ and impervious to any future attempts of proselytization.

I will conclude with the following apropos quote from AW Tozer:

If I see aright, the cross of popular evangelicalism is not the cross of the New Testament. It is, rather, a new bright ornament upon the bosom of a self-assured and carnal Christianity. The old cross slew men; the new cross entertains them. The old cross condemned; the new cross amuses. The old cross destroyed confidence in the flesh; the new cross encourages it.

    -
    Sincerely,
    The Pilgrim

  24. FOURPOINTER….
correctly pointed out that 2 of the “pastors” were women.
i wen tonthe website and determined that they are an A/G
when did the Assemblies of God start ordaining women?

  25. Yes Tom, 4P did bring up a great point, one that had not escaped me. However, we never got that far because we were entrenched in debating the merit and value of such a video.

But it wouldn’t matter because there will always be someone somewhere who will justifying anything, anytime.

    - The Pilgrim

  26. It’s certainly hard to imagine the apostles offering up such a display.

    In Christ,
    CD
