Umm…. With all due respect (and then some!) to Mr. Rev. Sprugeon, what about William Wilberforce? But other than than, NICE ONE!

Interesting point!
In keeping with the context of Spurgeon’s comment I’d say that Wilberforce still fits the general application here in that he was arguably “none the better” for his stint in politics, although it seems clear that politics (among other things) benefitted from him.
