Mark Driscoll Rejects McLaren But Embraces Contemplative

Source: Editors at Lighthouse Trails

Since last Fall, when Mark Driscoll, pastor of Mars Hill Church, denounced some of the teachings of emerging church leaders Brian McLaren and Doug Pagitt at the Convergence Conference at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, his talk has been the topic of many discussions across North America. People feel that such a denouncement by someone who had a role in start up of the emerging church is very noteworthy.

However, while Driscoll has placed himself in what he considers a more conservative and a biblical form of the emerging church, evidence shows that when it comes to the driving force behind the emerging church – mysticism – Driscoll embraces the same spiritual technology as McLaren and Pagitt.

A “Recommended Reading List” on Driscoll’s website shows that Driscoll resonates with contemplative and emerging church leaders who teach and adhere to eastern-style meditation.

About Coram Deo

Greetings! By way of introduction I am a born-again Christian who seeks to live in the presence of, under the authority of, and to the honor and glory of the Triune Yahweh Elohim Shaddai–the One True and Living LORD God Almighty Who is the self contained, self sufficient, and unique infinite Creator of all things. I believe the historic, orthodox, Biblical Christian faith as found in the 66 books of the Holy Bible is the only true and right religion that has been revealed to mankind and all other faiths and extra-Biblical sources of revelation are absolutely false and without any eternal merit or redemptive power. Through this medium I hope to share my worldview with any who are interested, and in this manner I hope to expand my witness to the lost, and extend whatever ability I’ve been given to edify the believer to the praise of the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ, the risen Savior. Sola Scriptura! (Scripture alone), Sola Fide! (faith alone), Sola Gratia! (grace alone), Soli Christo! (Christ alone) - Soli Deo Gloria! (to God alone be glory)

  1. Jim B. says:

Where is this “Recommended Reading List”? I can’t find it on the Mars Hill site. The article you linked to has a link that goes nowhere. The only reading list I could find is on the Acts 29 Network site:

    http://www.acts29network.org/resources/recommended-books/

I found none of the controversial books/authors on that site. I did find authors like John Piper, John Frame, Wayne Grudem, Bruce Ware, John Stott, etc.

    Jim B.,

I’ll alert Lighthouse Trails that their link is broken, thanks for pointing this out.

  3. I found a place where they are selling some books by different people. Here is the link on MD’s website:

    http://relit.org/library.php

I haven’t read any of them and so cannot comment on how good or bad they are. I am in disagreement with him so would not be ready or willing to read the books.

  4. “Driscoll embraces the same spiritual technology as McLaren and Pagitt.”………………………………………… simply not true. He does not in any way do this. This is a false statement. You actually need to listen to Driscoll denouncing Pagitt and McClaren at the South Eastern Baptist convention to realise that. Be careful of the accusations you make DefCon team.
