Exposing Error: T.D. Jakes and Oneness Pentecostalism

Since Team DefCon as of late has been accurately zeroing in on the spectacularly blasphemous spiritual caricature commonly known as T.D. Jakes I thought I’d take a moment to backlink to a few of my own pieces on this walking, talking, idol factory for the prayerful edification of DefCon’s readership.

From my piece entitled “Deceivers”:

T. D. Jakesgrew up in a Oneness Pentecostal denomination which denies the essential Christian doctrine of the Trinity [The Oneness Pentecostal denomination was declared a heresy by the Assemblies of God when it took organizational form in 1917]. When asked by Christian leaders to clarify if he believes in the Trinity [As defined in the Athanasian Creed] he will not clear up this matter. He refuses to give a clear answer as to what he means by “manifestations” when referring to the Trinity.

From my piece entitled “T.D. Jakes is a Sabellian/Modalist Heretic“:

It seems that some of my recent postsexposing the truth about T.D. Jakes have struck a nerve with one Dr. Pamela Y. O’Guinn. By her own report, and in violation of scripture, Dr. O’Guinn is a self-proclaimed “pastor/minister”and is clearly someone who blindly follows – and gladly prostrates herself before – the deceitful wolf in sheep’s clothing T.D. Jakes. In the midst of her confession of blind adoration and perverse man-worship of “The Bishop” the deranged doctor even goes so far in her fevered high-noon fantasies as to compare Jakes with Christ Himself, replete with crucifixion imagery no less! I must say that I’ve rarely seen such a shameless display of spiritual harlotry in all of my days.

From my piece entitled Exposing Error: Oneness Pentecostalism“:

Oneness Pentecostals: They deny the Trinity, require baptism for salvation, are legalistic, and do not preach the true gospel.

The above sounds like a strong statement and a serious charge that’s been leveled against the Oneness Pentecostal cult, yet it is the unvarnished truth. As some of my limited readership may recall I posted a brief series on the antics of Oneness Pentecostal heretic T.D. Jakes during October ’07,however that series didn’t provide as much detail on the manifold errors of the Oneness Pentecostal cult as it focused on the arch-deceiver Jakes himself.

In this brief post I’ll provide a brief list of Oneness Pentecostalism’s manifold doctrinal errors, and for more detailed information the reader can click the link at the beginning of this post and review CARM’s excellent resources on the cult.

The Oneness cultists, like T.D. Jakes, are no different from their spiritual “kissing cousins” in the LDS and JW camps; no one is “going to heaven” except for those who adhere to their particular cult’s brand of man-centered works righteousness soteriology, and when they are exposed to the blinding light of God’s truth as contained uniquely within the Holy Bible they will inevitably flee back toward the darkness or else show their true colors and ferociously attack like caged animals. But God Almighty in His sovereign providence has provided His true servants with more than enough spiritual weaponry to tear down every demonic stronghold that would exalt itself against the glorious knowledge of Jesus Christ:

Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. – Titus 1:9

But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: – Titus 2:1

If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. – 1 Tim 4:6

For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. – Romans 10:2-3

But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. – Romans 6:17

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready alwaysto give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: – 1 Peter 3:15

Maranatha Lord Jesus!

About Coram Deo

Greetings! By way of introduction I am a born-again Christian who seeks to live in the presence of, under the authority of, and to the honor and glory of the Triune Yahweh Elohim Shaddai–the One True and Living LORD God Almighty Who is the self contained, self sufficient, and unique infinite Creator of all things. I believe the historic, orthodox, Biblical Christian faith as found in the 66 books of the Holy Bible is the only true and right religion that has been revealed to mankind and all other faiths and extra-Biblical sources of revelation are absolutely false and without any eternal merit or redemptive power. Through this medium I hope to share my worldview with any who are interested, and in this manner I hope to expand my witness to the lost, and extend whatever ability I’ve been given to edify the believer to the praise of the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ, the risen Savior. Sola Scriptura! (Scripture alone), Sola Fide! (faith alone), Sola Gratia! (grace alone), Soli Christo! (Christ alone) - Soli Deo Gloria! (to God alone be glory)

It is interesting to note: The JW Faith claims that Jesus is the Mediator between God and Mankind or (144,000) Only. Then as luck would have it, They the Watchtower Organization is the ONLY Mediator between Christ and the Great Crowd.
Is it not Great that the Only way to get to God or his Christ, Jesus. Is to USE a MAN MADE ORGANIZATION that is centered in New York?
Think of that next time you want to be close to Jesus or God Almighty. Call New York and Make an Appointment. I assume they also shall be writting the Book of Life too?

  2. jesusblogger says:

Where in scripture does it say that one needs to believe in a Three Person God in order to be saved? The Creed of 381 AD bearing Athanasius’ name is not scripture is it?

Does it make one a heretic to baptise in the same fashion as the Apostles on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:38) or when Paul met the Ephesian disciples of John the baptist? (Acts 19).

Does not Jesus say that except a man be born of water and spirit he can not enter the kingdom of God (Jhn 3:5), did the Apostles also not preach that baptism (by faith) was for remission of sin (Acts 2:38).

  3. Dave C says:

The keyword is REPENT. You were to repent for forgiveness of your sins. Were Jesus’ sins forgiven by him getting baptized? No. He was sinnless. Baptism was a SYMBOL of your obedience to Jesus. Not a condition of salvation.

  4. Bill says:

    Jesusblogger,

The problem with modalism is that it denies that Jesus is eternal. They say Jesus came into existence in Bethlehem when He was born. If you don’t have a proper understanding of who Jesus is, you will die in your sins (John 8:24).

You’re twisting John 3:5 and Acts 2:38 to say what you want them to say, but the principal issue is that you are exchanging your good, religious deed of baptism for forgiveness of sins. That is called bribery. Do you think the holy and righteous God of the Bible will accept bribes?

    Thanks,
    Bill

    Steven A

Everybody who speak against the oneness they are People with ability to hear but could not understand or they will find themselves speaking against God being one.

Everybody who called himself a believer but denies the Acts2:38 as the three foundamental steps for Salvation they are doom,or maybe they have their own way of getting themselves to be save.

    For your help.

  6. Bill says:

    Steven,

It sounds like you believe in the oneness doctrine. Maybe I could get your thoughts on something. In Genesis 18, the LORD walked up to Abraham and ate with him, and talked to him. We know that no man has seen the Father (John 6:46), so who do you believe Abraham was talking to in Genesis 18?

Also, why have you chosen Acts 2:38 as the pivotal verse for what to do to be saved rather than a different verse like Mark 1:15?

    Thanks,
    Bill

  7. fourpointer says:

    Steve,

So, is it OK for Mormons to believe that Jesus was a created being who had to “learn” and “progress” to become a god? How about the Watchtower teaching that Jesus was a created being, and nothing more than a glorified angel? Do they worship the true God? Is it OK for them to worship a Christ of their own making?

They both embrace Acts 2:38 (in fact, in Mormonism, it is one of the First Ordinances). Are they saved?

BUT INSTED YOU TRUBBLE EACH OTHRE WITH SWIFT WORDS AND PRIDFULL KNOWLEDGE, IF YOU KNEW HIM YOU WHOUL HAVE PEACE .

Here is a quote I recieved from Lifeway when I asked them why they sell T.D. Jakes materials.

“We have been researching and monitoring T. D. Jakes for the past ten years. I have personally read and reviewed about 20 of his books. Regarding his theology, we are aware that some have accused T. D. Jakes of being a Oneness Pentecostal who has a Modalistic or Sabellian view of the Trinity. One of our directors had a lengthy telephone conversation with Rev. Jakes in which he denied that charge and described his orthodox view of the Trinity.”

  10. Shane,

You know I had a conversation with somebody who talked with somebody else who talked with a person who knew a certain high-placed individual, who said they talked with Benny Hinn. Hinn supposedly said that he no longer believes in faith healing and plans on giving back all his ill-gotten gains like Zaccheaus did. With that choice knowledge, I plan on asking my local “Christian” bookstore to start carrying Benny’s books and teaching guides! Poor guy has just been misunderstood all these years, despite what he has personally said and written.

Seriously, a telephone conversation is supposed to cover up all the heresies purported by these guys!!??!! If that is true then are we safe to assume that Jakes will be recalling all his former books, tapes, cds, dvds, etc, etc, etc.??

  11. shane says:

that was just part of an interesting email. Oh well, I guess they gots to make some money. Even if it might be 30 pieces of silver.
I thought about asking them about the Shack as well. Would probably get the same response. The reply they gave doesn’t surprise me.

I guess we need to just take in the good and spit out the bad. <extremely sarcastic

  12. Manfred says:

Hmmm – old post, new comments.

    Related story from life.

For many years I financially supported and prayed for Tony Evans. It was under his preaching in 1994 that I was saved from my sins by the grace of God in Christ Jesus.

Once in a while I would write Evans to thank him for this or that; a few times to ask him why he did something or other.

Last year, I saw a news report that Evans had been spending time with Jakes in planning and managing that year’s Nation Day of Prayer. Jakes, Jack Graham, and Evans would share the stage. I asked Evans why he would work publicly with and appear in public with a heretic such as Jakes; he wrote back to tell me he had personally confronted Jakes on his prosperity pimping and modalism but had not thought about the implicit endorsement that working and appearing with Jakes would convey.

Fast forward to this year. Monthly newsletters/solicitations from Evans sound and look a whole lot more like they came from Jakes. Evans does not reply to my letters asking about this change. I write him back and say “buh-bye” to another dear preacher who has drifted too far for me to support. sigh

    Maranatha, Lord Jesus.

I just sent the Youtube link to this video: http://defendingcontending.com/2009/05/27/wolf/
to the guy at Lifeway I have been speaking with about T.D.J.

It will be interesting to see his response.

Especially in light of T.D.’s orthodoxy…….. snicker

I read somewhere that a pastor in the S.B.C. has been trying to get Lifeway to remove books by heretical authors. I can’t remember where I read it at though. His words fell on deaf ears.

  14. The Pilgrim says:

The story you are remembering can be found here:

Recognizing those who are taking a stand against the current downgrade.

    - The Pilgrim

  15. shane says:

Thanks Pilgrim. I forgot that I had read it here. I found the post again shortly after I made the post above.

  16. shane says:

I got a reply back from my last email to Lifeway. Here is a quote.

“In the video, Jakes says, “I certainly believe Christianity is right.” It appears he didn’t want to offend the Unitarian who asked the question, so he avoided the John 14:6 answer. I agree that he should not have done that. However, on the website on his church, we find the following under “Belief Statement.”"

Seems to be a theme with these false preachers. They don’t want to offend anyone with the truth.

That’s going to be my last email to them. No sense in beating a dead horse.

  17. TINA says:

JOHN CH.10 V 30 READS ‘I AND MY FATHER ARE ONE’! ISAIAH CH9 V6 READS ‘FOR UNTO US A CHILD IS BORN, A SON IS GIVEN AND THE GOVERNMENT SHALL BE ON HIS SHOULDER, AND ‘HIS’ NAME SHALL BE CALLED WONDERFUL, COUNSELOR, THE MIGHTY GOD THE EVERLASTING FATHER THE PRINCE OF PEACE AND THIS KINGS NAME IS JESUS CHRIST!!! GOD BLESS YOU ALL

  18. Tatiana says:

Wow… Seems at the end of the day the almighty dollar wins… heresy sold at our local Christian bookstores, because these people bring in the money… I see that all the time when I go shop at Mardel, my favorite. Joel Osten right at the entrance… Where does that leave us? Seek for discernment, call on the Lord to give you wisdom, and much, much, much discernment. As one who takes the gospel to people as I am going, I would not associate myself with these men. And as I know none of us are fail proof, or none of us are knowledgable in all areas, and those I do follow could, might, perhaps make certain mistakes… that is why I also choose to know the Bible for myself.
