Preaching on the “outside” what should be preached on the “inside.”

Since Joel Osteen has announced the upcoming release of his new book, which I posted earlier here, I thought I’d add some more posts this week in honor of him and his Lakewood Church.

The following video is of a preacher standing outside Osteen’s church doing what Osteen has failed to do inside… preach the Gospel. I know, I know, some of you are saying, “but Pilgrim, he is preaching the ‘gospel’ inside.” Oh, I’m certain he is, but the “health, wealth, prosperity, have your best life now, become a better you” gospel of Osteen is not the gospel of Jesus Christ.

I was struck by the droves and droves of people that just walked past the preacher in the video as they exited Osteen’s Church. It reminded me of these illustrations in the Chick Tract entitled The Long Trip. To see the whole tract click on any of the pictures.

Anyway, without further ado, I present to you the man preaching the Gospel outside Lakewood Church that isn’t being preached inside Lakewood Church.

  1. Poor guy! That was sad that most just seemed to ignore him. You know what Joel Osteen reminds me of? A career/life motivational speaker. One of those that pushes positive thinking…which there are scriptures on keeping our minds on what is lovely and pure, in the bible sure…it does help protect our minds while we are being bombarded with things that are far from lovely and pure in the media, by others and just living in this world…but to act like this is all the bible is? One big positive back rub comfy blanket? That is just plain wrong. A person would have to ignore most of the bible in order to do this! Part of what is stressed in the bible is that God is there for us when the hard times hit. To love us and comfort us. But they are to be expected. And sometimes those hard time are very hard indeed! Anyway, yes our goal isn’t to be a ‘success’ in the world’s eyes here…but our success is by following our Savior only. And even that we cannot do without Him. We can’t take the credit for anything really…except when we stray from the Word!

Jesus clearly says “He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.” John 12. Maybe some of what this guy was saying will sink in with some of them. We can only hope.

  2. God’s Word will not return back void. Go out and preach regardless of whether you see results or not. It would be nice if more people did this kind of preaching. I wrote a book titled, “Locked Doors of the American Church” and it is about how we as Christians have locked our faith “inside” the church and are failing to take it out into the streets to reach the lost the way Jesus did! We need to start helping people understand the realities of hell. Not hell-fire preaching but tear-filled preaching that they are headed for hell if they don’t repent of their sins and put their faith and trust completely in Jesus!
